FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Trine University men's hockey team flipped the script from last night, scoring a last second goal of their own to split the series with Marian (Wis.) University with a 3-2 win.
The Thunder scored the lone goal of the first period despite being outshot 9-5. Ronnie Petrucci came up big in his first period as a starter for the team, keeping the Sabres off the board with nine saves. Drew Welsch scored the goal for Trine in the ninth minute of play with Drew Jeffers adding an assist.
Neither team scored in the second period, with Petrucci making six more saves to keep the lead. He ultimately ended the game with 18 saves and a win.
Marian went on a run to start the third period, scoring twice in the third minute of the stanza to take a lead of their own. Jeffers responded for the Thunder in the 15th minute with assists from Sam Antenucci and Welsch.
Tied 2-2 in the final minute of the game, it looked like the contest was headed to overtime, but for the second night in a row a last second goal ended the game in regulation. This time it was in favor of Trine. Logan Furstenau, with assists from Alexander Babich and Sean Henry, scored the game-winner with just 3.6 seconds remaining in the game.
Following the 3-2 victory, the nationally ranked Thunder are now 17-5-1 overall and 11-4-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA). Trine will finish the regular season with a home-and-home series against Adrian College who are also nationally ranked and currently sit fourth in the NCHA standings. Game one will take place in Thunder Ice Arena on Friday, February 14 with opening puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m.
