Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Hans Scores Overtime Winner Against Sabres

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's hockey team started the weekend with an overtime win, defeating Marian (Wis.) University 2-1. Payton Hans found the back of the net for the game winner just shy of two minutes into the extra period.

The first period was decidedly in favor of the visiting Sabres. They finished with 14 shots on goal to the Thunder's six and dominated time of possession. Annie Kindseth kept the home team in the game, making all 14 saves asked of her.

It was the same story for most of the second period, until Kailey Mleko forced a turnover in the defensive end and went the length of the ice for the first goal of the game. The 1-0 lead lasted until the final minute of the stanza when Marian snuck a shot by the blocker of Kindseth, tying the score for the second intermission.

The offensive effort ramped up for the third period, with both teams recording significant shots on goal. Both goalies stood up to the barrage, making 14 saves apiece, and sending the game to overtime still tied 1-1.

At the 1:44 mark of the extra period, the Sabres took a penalty for interference, giving the home side a power-play. Off the ensuing faceoff Hannah Lambers and Nevada Weisbrod passed the puck back and forth at the point. Their eventual pass toward the net found Payton Hans who skated back to the near faceoff circle before firing a shot into the top of the net, ending the game 2-1.

Kindseth finished the game with 36 saves while allowing just the one goal and earning the win.

Trine improves to 8-12-2 overall and 5-8-2 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) following the overtime victory. The two teams will faceoff again tomorrow, Saturday, February 8 with opening puck drop scheduled for 3 p.m.
