GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Trine University Men's Volleyball team opened MCVL play with a 3-0 sweep of Calvin on Wednesday evening.

Karl Both, and
Johnson-Kuhao Ho'okano-Pelekai threw a block party in Van Noord Arena, the Thunder used 12 blocks o punctuate the victory. Trine is now 11-5 (1-0 MCVL) while Calvin falls to 4-11 (0-1 MCVL).
Kevin Boncaro had 10 kills and
Ryan McDonald added 24 assists,
Carter Steffgen and
Ho'okano-Pelekai each had two aces. McLenon and Both had five blocks and Ho'okano-Pelekai added four. Trine took the match in straight sets 25-18, 25-14, 25-15.
Kills from McDonald, Steffgen, and Ho'okano-Pelekai along with an ace gave Trine an 11-6 lead. Calvin cut the lead to two, but Trine scored 8 of the next 10 to take control. Steffgen added another kill, McLenon had two, and Boncaro sent home three in a row. Trine took the set 25-18.
Trine trailed just once in set two, 1-0. They scored 15 of the next 18 points to make sure that wouldn't happen again. Both had three kills, Ho'okano-Pelekai added his second ace, while Steffgen, Boncaro, and
Ty Freeman each added a kill to take a 15-4 lead. Both notched his fourth and fifth kills of the set and Steffgen had an ace as Trine controlled set two.
Calvin kept things interesting in set three, taking a 10-9 lead. It was all Thunder from there, Trine close the night on a 14-5 run. Boncaro added two kills, Steffgen added his second ace, and Ho'okano-Pelekai added another kill. Trine benefited from a flurry of Knight attacking errors, Calvin hit -.018 on the evening.
Trine now has 16 days off before their next game, a March 14
th home match against Wabash.
