#13 Thunder Overcome Slow Start, Beat Saint Mary's

ANGOLA, Ind. – Allison Capouch drained six three pointers to lead the #13 Trine University Women's Basketball to an 81-61 victory over the Saint Mary's Belles. Trine extended their win streak to 10 and are now 18-2 (11-0 MIAA) while the Belles drop to 4-15 (1-9 MIAA).

The Belles made five of their first six field goals and the fast start provided them with a 9-1 advantage. An aggressive half court defense made things tough for the Thunder in the opening minutes. Trine overcame three early turnovers to take the lead. Hailey Cole keyed the rally, she started by assisting Capouch on her first triple, the converted and and-one opportunity. On the next possession she found Sydney Horton for a triple and Horton returned the favor on the next trip as Cole added two more in the paint. By then Trine had tied the game at 14.

Leading 20-19 to open the second quarter, Trine began to find an offensive rhythm, threes from Addison Hutson and Capouch opened up the Belles defense and allowed Trine to work the ball into the paint. Katie Tate scored one inside and then Capouch drilled two more long balls to give Trine a 10 point lead. The Belles responded with two threes of their own from Annie Restovich who knocked in seven on the day. Sidney Wagner beat the buzzer with a jumper to give Trine a 39-34 halftime lead.

Sierra Hinds assisted on Trine's first two baskets of the third quarter before Tate found her for a triple. Trine would score 12 of their third quarter points in the paint to claim a 13 point lead heading to the final quarter.

The Belles quickly cut the lead to seven to open the quarter, they kept it close with a pair of triples. Trine's defense stepped up to fend of the rally, forcing the Belles into three consecutive one-shot possessions and the offense turned those stops into an 8-0 run and take a 74-58 lead. Trine would pull away further as the teams emptied the benches over the final few minutes.

Trine is off on Wednesday night before hosting Alma on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
