ANGOLA, Ind. – A trio of Thunder scored in double figures as the #17 Trine University women's basketball opened their Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association season with a 65-46 win over Kalamazoo on Saturday afternoon.
Hailey Cole led with 15 points,
Annika Southworth pitched in 14 and
Erin Sherwood had 13. Trine is now 5-1 (1-0 MIAA), the Hornets fall to 1-6 (0-2 MIAA)
Trine out rebounded the Hornets 47-31, forced 16 turnovers, assisted on 11 of 20 made field goals and got 41 points off the bench.
It was a slow start for both teams as the teams were tied at six with just two minutes left in the first frame. Sherwood made an and-one and Southworth hit a triple to provide more offense before the end of the quarter.
The Thunder offense came to life in the second quarter. Cole and
Sophie Gesell each scored seven and Southworth and Sherwood each had four. The Thunder outscored the Hornets 26-4 in the quarter, including a 12-0 run. Sherwood and Gesell scored 11 of Trine's first 14 in the quarter.
Hailey Cole then scored six of the next seven as Trine stretched the lead to 22 at the break.
Kalamazoo outscored the Thunder in the second half but were never able to get within striking distance. The Hornets trimmed the lead to 16 early in the third quarter, Southworth and Cole responded with two points each to quiet the rally.
The Thunder erased any chance of a rally with a 7-2 burst to start the final quarter, stretching the lead to 26. Southworth hit a triple while
Madison Wagner and Cole each made a free throw. Trine held Kalamazoo nearly scoreless over the final two minutes, the Hornets lone basket coming with just one second left on the clock.
Trine is off until next Saturday when they travel to The University of Olivet for a 3:00 p.m. tip.
