OLIVET, Mich. – Four Thunder scored in double figures to lead the Trine University women's basketball team to its 20
th consecutive MIAA victory with an 82-45 win over The University of Olivet on Saturday afternoon.
Erin Sherwood led Trine, 6-1 (2-0 MIAA), with 20 points past the Comets, 1-6 (0-3 MIAA).
Annika Southworth,
Madison Wagner, and
Olivia Marks each scored in double figures.
Southworth nailed three longballs and added five rebounds, Wagner scored 14 as well and tallied six boards and four steals. Marks was 6-of-7 from the free throw line and added seven rebounds to go with 10 points.
Trine took control early with a 26-10 advantage after one quarter and opened the game with a 16-0 run. Sherwood had the hot hand early, shooting 3-of-4 and scoring eight points. Southworth and Wagner had five each. The Comets broke the run with a a free throw and answered with a 7-2 run.
Southworth and Sherwood reached double figures by halftime with five and four points, respectively. The Comets were able to prevent further damage by the Thunder by equaling the Thunder's 14 second quarter points. Wagner and Southworth each hit three pointers to open the quarter for Trine. Trine then went back to work in the paint, where they scored 50 of their 82 points to take a 40-24 lead into the half.
Trine put the Comets away in the third quarter with a 25-11 advantage and led 65-35 after the frame. Trine spread the ball around as seven different players scored and shot at a 50% clip. Wagner led with six and Marks had five more. The Thunder quickly stretched the lead from 16 to 24 and cruised into the fourth quarter.
The lead grew to 34 before the Thunder emptied the bench. The defense stayed dominant limiting Olivet to 10 points. For the game, Trine forced 23 turnovers, out rebounded the Comets 45-31 and limited their hosts to 29.2% shooting.
Trine hosts the Croxton and Roe Holiday Tournament next Saturday and Sunday. Olivet will participate alongside Wisconsin-Platteville and Hanover.
