Women's Basketball Cages Tigers with Fourth Quarter Comeback

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Trine University women's basketball team rallied from a nine-point fourth quarter deficit to post a 60-51 win over DePauw University on Monday afternoon. Erin Sherwood led with 11 points and the Thunder (7-3, 2-0 MIAA) nailed four of their eight three pointers in the final frame to take the victory and stun the Tigers (6-5, 0-1 NCAC).

Trine fell behind early and trailed 5-2 just three minutes into the game. The Thunder would make their next four field goals to spark an 11-0 run over three minutes of game time and take a 13-5 lead. Ally Capouch made a pair of threes and Sherwood took a steal the distance and capped the spurt with a layup. The Tigers rallied back to trail 16-13 at the end of the quarter.

The rallied continued into the second frame for the home team as they scored the first two baskets to take a lead they would not relinquish until the fourth quarter. The offense went cold for the guests, making just one field goal in the quarter, a triple from Sherwood. She added two free throws and Sophie Gesell had another to complete the scoring for Trine. DePauw led 29-22 at the half.

Olivia Marks got Trine on the board first in the second half, but the Tigers responded with the next nine points to put Trine in a 14-point hole. A timeout yielded a pair of baskets inside for Trine, both from Sherwood that cut the lead to ten. The teams traded baskets from there culminating in a made three from Madison Wagner that pulled Trine within nine headed to the fourth quarter.

Trine wasted no time cutting into the lead, Capouch hit her third triple of the game with just 14 seconds gone. Callie Nichols cut the lead to four with a layup in transition. DePauw responded with a free throw but the next nine points would come from the Thunder. Marks and Annika Southworth made three pointers while Hailey Cole and Gracey Metz combined for three free throws and the Thunder led 48-44. DePauw answered back with a layup from Campbell Schrank who led all scorers with 19 points. Southworth countered with Trine's fourth triple of the quarter to extend the advantage. There would be no answer this time as the basket started a 10-2 run that saw the lead grow to ten with just over a minute to play. Trine outscored DePauw 26-8 in the final quarter to steal the win.

The Thunder will compete in day two of the DePauw tournament tomorrow, taking on Elmhurst at 2 p.m.
