GREENCASTLE, Ind. – Four Thunder scored in double figures for the Trine University women's basketball team on Tuesday afternoon to score an 81-62 victory over Elmhurst University on day two of the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Tournament hosted by DePauw University.
Erin Sherwood paced Trine (8-3, 2-0 MIAA) with 21 points while
Madison Wagner,
Ally Capouch, and
Olivia Marks scored 17, 15, and 13 to lead the Thunder past the Blue Jays (6-5, 2-1 CCIW). Sherwood and Wagner were named to the All-Tournament team with Sherwood claiming MVP honors.
Marks scored five of Trine's first seven to give the Thunder a 7-2 lead. Elmhurst responded by tying the game at nine. Capouch got going from behind the three point line with a pair of makes that regained Trine's lead. She was a perfect three for three on the day. The lead did not hold as the Blue Jays responded with some three point shooting of their own to take a 21-19 lead after one.
The first quarter was the only quarter that Trine scored less than 20 points, the Thunder would score 21, 21, and 20 points in the remaining three frames, respectively. Capouch's perfect 3-for-3 mark was only bettered by Wagner who was 4-for-4 from downtown. Her first came in the midst of a 10-0 run to start the second quarter.
Olivia Marks was also efficient from long range, knocking down 3-of-4 long balls. She capped the run with a make of her own. Sherwood did the damage in the paint, scoring six. Capouch knocked in her third triple to push the Thunder lead to 34-25.
Hailey Cole scored three points, grabbed two rebounds and dished out an assist, all in the final two minutes of the half. The assist helped Wagner bury her second three pointer to put Trine up 40-33 at the break.
Cole pulled in a dozen rebounds on the day, five coming in the third quarter. The third frame was evenly matched with Trine leading the whole by as many as 11 and as few as six. Elmhurst trimmed the lead to a half dozen with 1:42 remaining. The Thunder scored the final six points to regain a comfortable advantage. Trine scored 12 of their 21 points in the paint and Wagner knocked down her final two triples to give Trine a 61-49 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
Elmhurst cut the lead to 68-60 with 5:21 to play, from there, Trine would finish on a 13-2 run. Sherwood and
Zoe Willems notched a pair of free throws each, Sherwood and Wagner each scored in the paint and then Wagner and Capouch each made a pair from the stripe. Trine tightened up defensively, forcing five one shot possessions and forcing three turnovers, turning the turnovers into four points.
This concludes the non-conference schedule for Trine, finishing with a 6-3 mark. Trine now turns it's full attention to league play which resumes on Saturday inside the MTI Center when they host Saint Mary's at noon.
