ANGOLA, Ind. – The #18 Trine University women's basketball team came up on the wrong end of a 49-46 overtime decision on day two of the Croxton & Roe Holiday Classic on Sunday afternoon. The Thunder (6-3, 2-0 MIAA) fell to Hanover College (8-3, 2-2 HCAC) on a buzzer beating three pointer inside the MTI Center.
Erin Sherwood paced the offense with 11 points.
Trine held a 54-44 advantage on the glass, bolstered by a 14 rebound effort from
Olivia Marks.
Madison Wagner added nine points and eight boards.
Like yesterday, Trine got off to a hot start taking a 16-12 lead after the first quarter. Wagner opened up a six point lead with a jumper just past the halfway mark. The Panthers responded with a 7-0 run to take a 12-11 lead. Freshman
Sophie Gesell and
Annika Southworth reclaimed the lead for the hosts with a basket each, Southworth's coming from beyond the three point line.
Hanover quickly leveled the score to open the second quarter, Trine continued the seesaw battle with another four point lead but were equalized quickly by the pesky Panthers. Wagner made four consecutive points and
Ally Capouch made a corner three with just five seconds left to give Trine a 28-25 lead at the break.
The pace slowed in the second half as the teams settled into their defenses, Trine in a man-to-man presence and Hanover in a ball pressure zone. Hanover cut the lead to one with a pair of baskets in the paint but Wagner answered with a three to extend the lead. Trine would lead 35-33 heading into the fourth quarter.
Trine struck first with two baskets in the paint, one by Sherwood and the other from Marks. Hanover answered with an 8-1 run to claim their first lead since the first quarter.
Hailey Cole got her own rebound and put the Thunder up 1 at 42-41, with 3:24 remaining. The lone remaining point came on a Panther free throw that sent the game to overtime.
Trine scored first as Marks converted a pair of free throws. Hanover answered with one and were called for a lane violation before they could attempt the second shot. Trine was unable to extend the one point lead and Hanover took advantage with an and-one layup to take the lead. Marks tied the game at 46 with 1:50 left. Neither team was able to score until Hanover had possession with 4.9 seconds left. They inbounded the ball up the pair sideline and into the front court. Trine was able to poke it loose and the game appeared to be heading to a second extra period, but Hanover's Sammy Berman heaved up a shot at the buzzer that banked in and gave the Panthers the walk off win.
Trine returns to action on December 29
th at the DePauw Invitational. They will take on the host Tigers on the 29
th and Elmhurst University on the 30
th.
