ANGOLA, Ind. –
Ally Capouch poured in a career high 32 points to lead the Trine University women's basketball team who were defeated by Wisconsin Lutheran 66-64 on Saturday afternoon inside the MTI Center. Capouch's 32 points are the fifth most in a single game in Trine history, her seven threes are tied for the second most.
Capouch did most of her damage from behind the three point line, making seven at a blinding 63.6% rate. She also converted on seven of eight free throws. Trine started hot, claiming a 29-14 lead by the end of the first quarter. Capouch wasted no time getting going, she connected on her first triple just over a minute into the game for Trine's first points.
Erin Sherwood converted an and-one and Capouch added five more points as Trine held an 11-2 lead under four minutes into the game.
Madison Wagner poured in two triples of her own as Trine owned the first quarter and looked set to pull away.
The pace slowed in the second quarter with Trine missing their first four shots.
Olivia Marks snapped the cold spell with a layup just over four minutes into quarter two. WLC's Jayden Hill and Kenly Frey helped the Warriors claw back into the contest, seemingly grabbing every steal or defensive rebound through the second quarter. They combined for eight points as WLC cut the lead to 39-30 at the break. Capouch helped to minimize the damage with her third triple.
Wisconsin Lutheran scored 12 of the first 15 points of the second half and leveled the score at 42. Capouch answered back with long ball number four to regain the Thunder advantage. Three Thunder turnovers and a triple from WLC's Frey saw the lead change in favor of the Warriors 54-51 after the third quarter.
WLC stretched the lead to six early in the final frame, again Capouch answered with a three. The Warriors immediately responded by stretching the lead to eight off a pair of Trine turnovers with 5:47 left. The Trine defense buckled down from there, allowing just four more points over the final stretch.
Addison Hutson made a tough jumper to beat the shot clock on Trine's next possession.
Sophie Gesell drew an offensive foul and regained possession for Trine who quickly found Capouch in her favorite spot for her sixth long ball. The teams traded layups and the lead was 64-61 for WLC. Capouch hit her final three to even the score with 2:39 left. WLC regained the lead on two made free throws and held Trine scoreless over the last 1:33 to clinch the win.
Trine returns to the MTI on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with Baldwin Wallace.
