ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's soccer team tied this evening's MIAA Quarterfinal matchup against Adrian College. The game went to penalties after two more scoreless overtime periods where Trine advanced 5-4 and will now take on Hope College on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
A day late of Halloween,
Julia Benham put on her cape and played SuperWoman this evening. An early second half goal from the Bulldogs threatened the Thunder's chances. Benham stepped up in the 70
th minute on a fast break.
Abby Robison brought the ball up the near sideline and broke toward the goal, the Bulldogs centerback contested Robison who passed toward the center of the goal box. Benham beat the charging keeper to the ball and buried her shot in the top left of the net and tied things at one.
Erin Scully had Trine's best opportunities of overtime. Scully sent the first shot just too high in the first period. The second looked to be a no-doubt goal as the shot bent toward the goal from the top right of the Bulldogs goalbox and past the keeper. A Bulldog defender made the heads up play and leapt up to head the ball over the goal and prevent the score.
The game was sent to penalty kicks following the second overtime. Each team made their first two attempts.
Kaeli Sterling and
Abby Scheil converted for Trine. The Bulldogs missed their third shot off the top woodwork.
Samantha Sanderlin and
Maggie McDowell each knocked their shots in to enter round five up 4-3. Adrian kept the pressure on with a make on their fifth attempt, tying things at four. Benham was up for the Thunder. Like her goal, her penalty shot went to the top left and found the back of the net and sent Trine through to the MIAA Semifinals.
Trine heads to Holland, Michigan on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. matchup with Hope College.
