HOLLAND, Mich. –
Abby Robison and the Trine University women's soccer team struck first in Tuesday night's MIAA Semifinal match at Van Andel Soccer Stadium and eventually tied the Hope College Flying Dutch. Hope would advance on penalties following overtime and end the Thunder's season at 9-4-6 (5-2-1 MIAA). Hope advances to take on Calvin for the MIAA Championship.
Robison cashed in in the eighth minute from about five yards out on a shot to the far post that found the back of the net and gave Trine an early 1-0 lead. Hope's Olivia Dieppa followed Robison's goal with three shots over the next 20 minutes. The first two were saved by
Madison Kinneer, her third shot ricocheted off a Thunder defender and found its way into the goal. Dieppa was credited with the goal. MIAA Freshman of the Year
Ava Leihgeber put a shot on goal in the 37
th minute, trying the bottom center but was turned away.
Kinneer stopped both of the Dutch's shots on goal in the second half. Trine had three shots in the second half but only one came on goal. Second team All-MIAA selection
Erin Scully fired a shot with just 49 seconds left toward the bottom left of the goal, again the Dutch keeper was there to make the stop.
Kinneer again kept the Thunder alive with a masterful performance in the first overtime. The senior made three saves to keep the Thunder alive. The Thunder offense found a groove in the second overtime. MIAA Offensive Player of the Week
Julia Benham had a shot on goal and first team All-MIAA selection
Abby Robison found herself inside the Dutch's goal box with the ball and time winding down. Just as she turned to take her shot a Dutch defender came flying into the box and kicked the ball away, sending the game to penalties.
Trine was up first in the penalties and
Kaeli Sterling buried her shot in the top right corner. Hope leveled things at one each before the keepers' traded saves. Trine then missed a pair of shots, one right and one high while the Dutch converted on both and advanced to Saturday's MIAA title game, 3-1.
The loss ends the season for the Thunder.
