FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Six members of the Trine University football team have been named to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) all-conference teams, the association announced today. Two Thunder were named first team while the other four came in on second team.
Senior Cortaveon Barnett represented the team as a first team running back. The Lawrence, Ind. native led the team with 604 rushing yards coming at a clip of 6.2 yards per attempt. During conference contests he was second in the MIAA with 475 yards rushing, seventh in yards per attempt and fifth with seven touchdowns.
Also selected to first team was senior Rashawn Street, as a return specialist. The Indianapolis, Ind. native was a terrifying present on kickoff returns. He led the team with 390 yards through the season and was third among conference opponents with 214 yards at a clip of 30.6 yards per return. All his conference returns came in the first two games, including a 90-yard touchdown against Hope College, before opposing coaches refused to kick in his direction.
Tristan Burrus earns his second straight All-MIAA selection, this time as a receiver. The Aurora, Colo. native was Trine's top wideout finishing the season with 514 yards. He was fourth on the team with 12.85 yards per reception. During MIAA play, the senior was eighth with 421 yards and 60.1 yards per game, while finishing tenth with 14 yards per reception.
Junior Jaiden Boykin was the last offensive member of the team recognized by the MIAA. The Casselberry, Fla. native was a full year starter at tackle for the offensive line, helping the team finish third in the MIAA in rushing.
The lone defensive honoree for the Thunder was junior Ridge Howard who was selected as a second team linebacker. The Middlebury, Ind. native was second on the team with 46 tackles and with 5.5 tackles for a loss. He added an interception, four pass breakups and nine quarterback hurries.
Senior Bryce Hufford rounded out the delegation as the second team kicker. The Portage, Ind. native was the go-to place kicker for the Thunder this season, finishing seven of eight from the field and 36 for 37 on point after attempts. During conference play he was third with five field goals made and tied for tenth in scoring, accounting for 42 points through the seven games.
The Thunder finished the season with a 5-5 overall record and a 3-4 record in conference play. It is the 12th straight season that the team has finished with a five hundred or better record, including all 11 years under head coach Troy Abbs.
