ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's ACHA D2 hockey team had a busy but successful weekend, picking up three victories in three days. They defeated Indiana Tech twice and then Purdue Northwest in their third game.
The Thunder opened the weekend slate late on Friday, November 7 inside of the Thunder Ice Arena. After the Warriors scored first in the ninth minute of the contest, Trine rattled off eight straight for a convincing 8-1 victory. Tyler Riegle scored first a minute after the opposition broke the stalemate. Nate Rider scored in the 17th minute, his goal ultimately served as the game winner.
Also scoring the contest were Ben Sherman, Andrew Kieffer, Ethan Ruggeri, Sam Krauhs and William Nilsson. Ruggeri led the team with a pair of goals. Krauhs's goal was the first of his ACHA career.
Indiana Tech hosted the second game of the weekend and put up a tougher fight in the contest. Ben Meyer opened the scoring in the first with his first ACHA goal to give the team a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission. The Warriors tied the game in the second with their first goal.
Joshua Danielowski scored in the opening minutes of the third for another lead, but home team responded again with their second goal of the game. The teams needed extra time to secure a result with Chancellor Coger scoring at the 1:22 mark of the overtime period for the win.
In an exciting finale to the stretch of games, the Thunder came from behind to beat Purdue Northwest 5-3. The two teams traded goals in the first 42 minutes of play, with the Pride scoring at 1:36 in the third for a 3-2 lead. That score held until the final five minutes of the game when Coger scored followed by Nilsson to retake the lead for the Thunder. Coger iced the game with an empty-netter.
Coger and Kieffer each finished the weekend with five points.
Three different goalies played for the team, each earning a win. Ian Young took the first game and finished with 24 saves. Lucas Henderson played on Saturday and finished with 28 saves. Kyle Diehr played on Sunday and finished with 27 saves.
The Thunder will next take the ice when they host Concordia University Wisconsin for a pair of games. The first is scheduled for 9:15 p.m. on Friday, November 21.
