GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – An otherwise defensive battle saw three goals scored in five minutes in the second half as the Trine University women's soccer team fell 2-1 in MIAA action on Wednesday night. The Calvin Knights scored the latter pair and move to 7-4-0 (3-0-0 MIAA), Trine falls to 5-3-3 (1-1-0).
Trine managed two shots on goal in the first half both coming in the first 17 minutes.
Abby Robison got the first shot off in the eighth minute, trying the low middle of the Knight's goal.
Ava Leihgeber tried the top right in the 17
th minute but both shots were knocked away.
Madison Kinneer made three saves in the net for the Thunder. She was tested early, in the second minute she turned away a Calvin shot and made two other saves in the 30
th and 41
st minutes.
The teams traded shots through the early portion of the second half.
Samantha Sanderlin found paydirt in the 76
th minute off a corner kick.
Julia Benham put the ball on net and Sanderlin knocked it in. The Knights quickly returned the favor with a goal on a corner kick of their own. The difference game two minutes later when Calvin regained possession on the ensuing kickoff and again found the back of the net. Trine earned a corner kick in the 82
nd minute and
Erin Scully fired a shot in the 89
th minute but neither connected and the Thunder's fate was sealed.
Trine hosts Hope at Shive Field on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
