ANGOLA, Ind. –
Maggie McDowell netted a pair of first half goals to propel the Trine University women's soccer team to a 4-0 halftime lead, and ultimately a 4-1 win on Saturday afternoon at Zollner Stadium. Trine scored three goals in the first 16 minutes to quickly put away the visiting Saint Mary's Belles. The Thunder are now 8-4-4 (4-2-1 MIAA), The Belles fall to 8-4-3 (2-4-1 MIAA).
Trine got to work quickly, scoring two goals in the first five minutes.
Erin Scully scored the first in the fourth minute.
Kaeli Sterling found Scully open in front of the net, who put shot away on the top shelf. 58 seconds later
Abby Robison dished to
Maggie McDowell who fired a shot past the Belles' diving keeper for the second score. McDowell again went low left in the 16
th minute, this time on her own to push the lead to a commanding 3-0. The pace slowed from there with Trine taking just one shot over the next 26 minutes. Trine's fourth goal came on a great pass from
Maddie Gasaway. Gasaway took the ball up the field just outside the near post, approaching to six yard box she found a cutting
Lilly White who buried the shot in the low right corner.
Game seemingly in hand, Trine further slowed the pace in the second half to limit the Belles offensive opportunities.
Cassidy Hofstetter made a save in goal for Trine. The Belles found pay dirt in the 85
th minute to breakup the shutout bid.
Trine closes the regular season on Tuesday evening with a 7:30 p.m. contest against The University of Olivet.
