ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's volleyball team fell to nationally-recognized Albion College in four sets on Wednesday night inside Hershey Hall.
Elli Baker notched 18 kills to lead the Thunder who are now 8-13 (3-2 MIAA). Albion improves to 19-3 (4-1 MIAA) with the win and are receiving votes in the latest AVCA Coaches' Poll.
Albion took the match in four sets 25-23, 25-15, 21-25, and 25-21. Trine rallied from a quick 4-0 deficit to take a 7-5 lead behind a pair of kills from Baker and
Emmaline Leatherman, who hit .429 in the set. A back and forth battle ensued resulting in 11 ties and four lead changes. Trine led 20-18 before Albion closed on a 7-3 run to take the set.
The Britons rode the momentum into set two, winning the set convincingly. Baker added three more kills and
Julia Maggio added a pair of aces.
Anna Zellers dished out 29 assists on the evening.
Trine came alive in set three, hitting .318 and taking the set 25-21. Baker nailed eight kills and hit .500, Leatherman had five kills to bolster the offensive attack that scored 19 points via kill. The win did not come easy however, Albion force 11 ties and five lead changes. Trine's winning margin of four was the largest for either team in the set.
Trine looked primed to force a fifth set taking a 7-3 lead in the fourth set. Baker had three early kills and MIAA Specialist of the Week
Jordan Budzinski had two aces. Albion quickly turned the tide and claimed a 15-12 lead and extended it to 20-14 shortly after. Trailing 24-17, Trine mounted one final rally to pull within three before Albion ended the match with a kill.
Trine returns to action next Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. tilt with The University of Olivet.
