ANGOLA, Ind. – The #2 Trine University Men's Basketball team fell 62-58 to Calvin inside the MTI Center this evening.
Nate Tucker scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Thunder. Trine falls to 16-2 (6-1 MIAA) while Calvin now holds the top spot in the MIAA at 12-6 (7-0 MIAA).
Calvin opened the game with a 12-5 lead just under eight minutes in. Trine rallied from the slow start and began chipping away at the lead, back to back threes from
Aidan Smylie and
Drew Moore pulled the Thunder within four. Defense became offense for Trine as
Cam Smith came up with a steal and took it the distance for an and-one.
Logan McKenzie grabbed a defensive rebound and then made a layup to give the Thunder the lead. Calvin led 34-27 at the break.
The Knights quickly extended the lead to 41-29 to start the second half.
Emmanuel Megnanglo ended the run with a high-flying two-handed dunk that erupted the Thunder crowd. Smith made another layup, he finished with nine points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
Grant Pahl added an and-one and then Moore scored five consecutive points to cap a 12-2 run by the Thunder. Tucker tied the game with another and-one and Megnanglo split a pair of free throws to give Trine the lead. He missed the second, but there to grab the rebound was Tucker, he put put up a tough jumper and found the bottom of the net to push the lead to three. Calvin would reclaim the lead with just over three minutes to play and never surrender it.
Trine closes out a three game home stand on Saturday when they host Adrian at 3:00 p.m. That game is the second of a double header with the women's team.
