GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The #13 Trine University Women's Basketball team remained unbeaten in MIAA play with a 62-59 win over Calvin this evening. The Thunder outscored the hosts 20-13 over the fourth quarter to complete the comeback. Trine is now 17-2 (10-0 MIAA) and winners of nine straight. Calvin falls to 11-8 (7-3 MIAA).
Erin Sherwood scored 18 points,
Sidney Wagner added a 17-point 10-rebound double-double and
Hailey Cole scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds in just 13 minutes of action. Wagner added six dimes and three steals. Wagner and Sherwood each scored four in the first quarter and assisted on another bucket. The score was knotted at 12 after the first quarter.
Calvin scored the first five points of the second quarter and took a 20-19 lead. Trine then scored 11 unanswered to reclaim a commanding lead. Wagner started the run by finding Sherwood for a basket, then
Jada Rhonehouse added one of her four assists as
Sierra Hinds made a layup. Sherwood cashed in on a trip to the charity stripe while
Zoe Willems and Cole each scored in the paint. Trine scored 50 of their 62 points in the paint. The Thunder led 30-24 at the break.
Calvin dominated the third quarter, outscoring the visitors 22-12, the Knights knocked in three triples and took a four point lead to the final frame.
The Knights led by five halfway through the fourth quarter.
Hailey Cole started the comeback with four points in 29 seconds. Wagner added a layup and Sherwood added two and Trine led 58-57 with 2:16 to play. The score would remain there until
Katie Tate made a free throw with 27 seconds left. Calvin made a pair from the stripe with 16 seconds remaining to tie the game. Out of a timeout, Trine held possession.
Sidney Wagner keyed the offense from just inside halfcourt, she drove the lane and collapsed the Knights 2-3 zone, Wagner kicked the ball to the corner for a waiting Hinds who drilled Trine's only three of the night with four seconds remaining for the win.
Trine returns to the MTI to begin a three game home stand on Saturday against Saint Mary's. That game is set to tip at 1:00 p.m. and is the first game of a double header with the men's team.
