ADRIAN, Mich. – The #17 Trine University Women's Basketball team used a 25-3 third quarter advantage to claim a dominant 79-49 victory over the Adrian Bulldogs Wednesday Night at the Merillat Center. Three scored in double figures and
Sidney Wagner notched her second consecutive double-double as the Thunder improve to 13-2 (6-0 MIAA) while the Bulldogs are 3-12 (2-4 MIAA).
It was a tale of two halves on Wednesday evening as the Thunder led by just four at half time before outscoring the hosts 46-20 in the second half. The teams swapped the lead five times in the first quarter,
Erin Sherwood gave Trine their first lead with a layup, she had 14 points on the night. A Bulldog triple would regain the lead for the home team, just 15 seconds later
Addison Hutson took it right back and Trine led 8-7. About a minute later Adrian knocked in a triple to again take the lead, but not for long, this time for only 14 seconds later it was a three from
Allison Capouch to regain the Thunder lead. Capouch hit three triples and scored 11 points.
Sidney Wagner padded the lead with a layup, she added 14 points to round out the trio of double figure scorers.
Adrian would regain the lead one more time in the second quarter,
Erin Sherwood would again give Trine the lead, this time for good. Wagner hit a jumper and
Hailey Cole knocked in a pair from the line as Trine built a 33-29 advantage. The back and forth would not continue to the second half.
Trine made a statemen to open the third quarter, scoring 19 unanswered points. Six different players scored including Capouch and Hutson who buried triples and gave Trine a 23 point advantage. Trine forced four Bulldog turnovers and limited them to one shot on their first eight possessions.
Leading by 26, entering the fourth quarter the teams traded baskets for nearly all of the fourth quarter. Trine went deep into the bench with about four minutes remaining. A late three from
Madison Wagner provided Trine with the 30 point victory.
