SEWANEE, Tenn. – Senior
Teresa Ashbrook netted a goal in the 28
th minute off an assist from fellow Senior
Bella Mabry to give the Thunder an early lead. A second half goal from Mary Hardin-Baylor's Natalie Mason would force a draw as neither team was able to find the back of the net after the 62
nd minute. Trine moves to 1-1-2 on the young season and the Crusaders are now 2-1-1.
The early part of the first half was largely dominated by the Crusaders as they registered two corner kicks and two shots, including one on goal; Senior
Sophie Aschemeier would have none of it, making the save. After a flurry of substitutions by each team in the 25
th minute the Thunder were on the offensive. A free kick by TU led to a shot from Freshman
Julia Benham, the shot deflected off a Crusader and gave the Thunder a set piece from the corner. The Thunder would not miss on their second opportunity, Mabry found Ashbrook who rocketed the ball past the Cru keeper high and left for the goal. The game was mostly a defensive battle for the next dozen minutes. UMHB again was able to register a two shots on goal in the 40
th and 41
st minute, but again Aschemeier was unfazed and stopped both, allowing the Thunder to take a 1-0 lead to halftime.
UMHB started the second half controlling the ball, and again, the Thunder defense proved too tough and Aschemeier registered a trio of saves. However, in the 62
nd minute the Crusaders' Natalie Mason was able to get a shot past the Thunder defense. A defensive stalemate ensued the rest of the way as neither team was able to get a shot past the defense. The Cru were able to get a shot on goal in the 83
rd minute but Aschemeier was again up for the challenge and knocked it away.
On the day Aschemeier recorded 13 saves. UMHB held a 24-5 advantage on shots and a 3-1 advantage on corner kicks. The Thunder return to the pitch on Wednesday for a matchup with Ohio Northern in Ada, Ohio at 4:30 p.m.
