ANGOLA, Ind. – Visiting Albion College spoiled the 2024 Homecoming football game, defeating Trine University by the score of 42-14.
The Thunder dominated the opening minutes of the contest. After winning the coin toss and deferring the defense came up with an interception on the opening drive of the game. After a pair of first downs gave the Britons the ball at the 32 yard line, Trine just missed out on a sack on second down but still forced a third and 16 for the opposition. On the long final chance
Trey Richards came up with the interception, which he returned forty yards to the Albion 30 yard line.
With a short field, the Thunder offense put together a steady drive to the endzone.
Cole Alexander connected
Owen Hebberd for one first down with
Saleem Felder rushing for a second, setting up a first and goal from the six. The drive ended when Alexander found
Tristan Burrus for the touchdown.
Albion's second drive ended the streak for the home team. They went 68 yards on six plays for their first points of the game, a touchdown that tied the contest. The Briton defense forced a quick stop and a second quick touchdown followed for the visitors making the score 14-7. The same happened again to make the score 21-7.
Alexander connected with
Jermaine Williams for 45 yards to start the next Thunder drive, injecting a spark into the crowd. The next pass went to Burrus for the team's second touchdown of the day. A
Colton Wampler kick made the score 21-14.
Albion silenced any first half comeback in the second part of the second quarter. Their next drive consisted of one pass for 73 yards and another touchdown. The defense picked off and then forced a fumble on the next two Trine possessions. They scored two more touchdowns in the half building the 42-14 lead.
The Thunder defense made adjustments at halftime and played a strong second half where they allowed no more points by Albion. Unfortunately, the Britons did the same and the game ultimately went final at 42-14.
In addition to his interception Richards led the team with nine tackles in the game.
Blake Lincoln finished second with eight while
Preston Sisson had seven.
Alexander finished the game 11-of-22 for 180 yards and two touchdowns but finished the game with three interceptions and a fumble. Burrus led the team 101 yards in receiving including the pair of touchdowns for the team. Felder led the team with 38 yards on the ground.
The Thunder fall to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play following the loss. The team will travel to Hope College for their next game. That contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 5.
