HOLLAND, Mich. – Nationally ranked Hope College was too much for the Trine University football team, handing them their second Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) loss of the season. The Flying Dutch, who are ranked in both the D3football.com and AFCA national polls, won by the score of 42-6.
Hope led the contest nearly from start to finish. They took the opening kickoff of the contest and needed just over a minute to tally their first touchdown. After a quick first attempt by the Thunder offense, the home team scored their second to build a 14-0 lead with just under 12 minutes remaining in the first quarter.
The Trine defense finally forced a stop on the third offensive attempt for the Flying Dutch.
Charles Thompson chased down the opposition's back and forced a fumble into the endzone where
Trestan Kern made the recovery. The Thunder went on to force a punt in their other chance of the quarter.
Hope scored twice more in the first half to build their commanding lead to 28-0 for the intermission.
Trine took the opening offensive possession of the second half and found some success on the ground.
Saleem Felder was the leader of that drive on the ground, while
Ivyn Collins completed his first three passes of the game, all for first downs. The drive eventually stalled just on the Hope side of midfield.
Dan Le-Hernandez recorded a nearly perfect punt to pin the Flying Dutch on their own two-yard line.
The ensuing 98 yard drive ate up most of the third quarter and ended with a 35-0 lead for Hope. Their first drive of the fourth made the score 42-0.
The Thunder finally found the endzone in the final minutes of the game.
Jimmy Gillette led the drive at quarterback and finished off with a 34 yard pass to
Daishean Jamison for the touchdown with 35 seconds remaining. The 42-6 score went final after a kneel down by the home team.
Trine falls to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in MIAA play following the loss. Next week is a bye for the team, with their next contest scheduled for Saturday, October 19 when they will host The University of Olivet. That contest is scheduled to kickoff at 1 p.m.
