ANGOLA, Ind. – Visiting Wheaton (Ill.) College scored three goals in the mud and rain to hand Trine University men's soccer their fifth loss of the season, despite a late push from the home team. The final for the match was 3-1 in favor of the visitors.
The Thunder played strong to start the match, pressuring in the offensive zone. They came up with the first shot of the game when
Jarick Aguilar found the center of the net in the fourth minute of play, forcing a save from Wheaton. A few minutes later
Ben Borak and
Gavin Hardy had back-to-back shots on goal, with the second earning the team a corner attempt.
Both teams settled into their defense following the flurry of activity. Until in the 23
rd minute when Wheaton connected some nifty passes inside of the penalty area that ended with their first goal of the contest. Ten minutes later they added their second when an apparent shot attempt turned into a perfect pass into the six-yard box. There was some question about whether the goal scorer was onside, but the flag stayed down, and the goal stood.
Trine had the final push of the half, with three near misses in the offensive end in the final minutes of the period.
Anes Dervisevic started the run with a shot to the bottom of left of the goal, it went off the keeper and out to earn a corner chance. That set piece yielded a shot from the near side by
Brayden Macy that went off the post and back into play. Dervisevic had a second chance on the rebound that the keeper just kept out.
Out of the intermission,
Braden Estep applied some offensive effort for the Thunder, recording three shots toward or on the goal in the opening ten minutes. The final two were on goal both forcing saves to the bottom left side of the goal. Wheaton added their third goal of the contest in the 76
th minute taking the commanding lead.
Trine put the full-pitch press on for the last ten minutes of the contest, yielding multiple shots but none coming on goal. Until in the final minute of play when
Mohamed Aljably made a great pass from near midfield into the center of the penalty area. Aguilar was in position to push the ball home with a header.
The game ended 30 seconds later with the final 3-1 score in favor of the visitors.
The Thunder fall to 2-5-0 overall following the loss. The team is set to travel to South Bend, Ind. for their next competition where they will face the University of Notre Dame. The match is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
