SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Trine University men's soccer team traveled to face NCAA Division I opposition from the University of Notre Dame. Despite scoring an early goal against their hosts, the Thunder were outmatched in the contest falling 7-1.
An early penalty kick gave the Fighting Irish the early lead, which they added to over the next 15 minutes to make the score 3-0 with just under 73 minutes remaining. It was then that Trine responded with a goal of their own.
Braden Estep scored the tally, his first of the season.
Neither team scored for the next 40 minutes of game time. On Trine's defensive end that effort was led by
Dillon Lambert, who made the start in net. He finished his 68 minutes of play with six saves, despite allowing six goals.
Aidan McGonagle finished out the game allowing one more goal.
Notre Dame scored four more goals between the 60
th and 80
th minutes to build their final lead of 7-1.
The Thunder fall to 2-6-0 following the loss. They will continue their season when they travel to face a second NCAA Division I opponent, this time for an exhibition contest, scheduled for 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 6. That game will take place in Evanston, Ill. against Northwestern University.
