Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Fronczak's Late Game Heroics give Women's Soccer the win over Capital

ANGOLA, Ind. – Junior Francesca Fronczak sent home a beautiful bending free kick from the corner of the box with just 31 seconds left to lift the Trine University Women's Soccer team to a 3-2 win over Capital. The win improves the Thunder's record to 3-1-2 and drops the Comets to 1-4-0.

From the start today's game at Weaver Field was a thriller. In just the fourth minute Capital was able score to take an early lead but Trine responded just five minutes later with a goal of their own off the right foot of Darcy Satkowiak. A defensive battle ensued for the next 71 minutes as the two teams traded shots but neither were able to find the back of the net. Senior Sophie Aschemeier made six saves in goal for the Thunder.

In the 83rd minute the game switched from a defensive slugfest to an offensive shootout. Trine gained control of the ball in the 81st minute and made some attempts to get a shot off but to no avail. A corner kick in the 82nd minute led to a shot from Fronczak that was blocked by the Comets, but Sophomore Reganne Koskela was able to control the deflection and send home a shot that bounced off the Comets keeper and then off the left post and into the goal. Trine then held a 2-1 advantage with less than eight minutes remaining. Capital immediately was on the offensive and were able to get two shots off but neither were on target. A corner kick with less than two minutes remaining gave Capital a chance to even the score and the Comets were able to do just that with a header from Rachel Austin found the bottom right corner of the goal and leveled the score at 2.

The game appeared destined for a tie as the teams traded clearing kicks with just over a minute left. That's when Freshman Lilly White was able to control one of the Thunder's kicks. On her attacking attempt she was tripped by Capital's Ryanne Michel and drew a yellow card giving Fronczak a set piece from the corner of the 18-yard box with 31 seconds left. Fronczak then ripped a high bending shot around the wall of Comet defenders and into the top corner of the goal just above the outstretched arms of Capital's keeper.

On the late goal, all coach Gary Boughton had to say was "Fran gonna Fran"

Trine returns to Weaver Field Wednesday night for a matchup with Denison at 5 p.m.
