CLEVELAND, Ohio – Last second heroics led the Trine University men's soccer team to their second win of the season.
Anes Dervisevic recorded the difference maker with 13 seconds remaining, giving the Thunder a 1-0 win over their hosts from Case Western Reserve University.
Trine was on their heels for much of the first half, with the Spartans firing seven shots with three forcing saves from
Aidan McGonagle. Trine spent little time on the other end of the field, recording just one shot of their own.
The team found rejuvenation at halftime, especially on the defensive side of the ball. The Thunder allowed just four more shots during the second half, with only one on target, turned aside by a defender rather than McGonagle. Offensively the Thunder forced their first save in the 54
th minute of play.
Djimo Kouyate came up with that shot, which forced a diving effort by Case Western's keeper.
The game looked destined for a draw after the Thunder came up with a clear in the waning seconds of the contest. Kouyate ended up with the ball near the defensive 40 yard line and changed the course of the contest with a spectacular stutter step passed a defender. The sophomore moved to the center of the field before firing a pass from just across midfield. That attempt had backspin that caused it to curve perfectly to the top corner of the penalty area.
Dalton Douglas was able to receive the pass in stride and move further toward the end line where he lobbed the ball back toward the goal. The pass went just over the outstretched hands of the keeper onto the leaping left foot of Dervisevic and into the goal.
The Thunder improve to 2-2 overall following the last-second victory. They will continue their road trip on Sunday, September 15 when they face John Carrol University, who are currently receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches national poll. Opening kickoff is scheduled for noon.
