BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Trine University women's soccer team picked up their first win of the season by defeating Illinois Wesleyan University 1-0 on the road.
The Thunder went on the offensive from the start, firing a pair of shots in the opening five minutes one each by
Abigail Marks and
Julia Benham. Neither was on net, but the response from the Titans was. The home side forced two saves in the opening 15 minutes by
Sophie Aschemeier, both in the bottom left of the net.
In the 16
th minute of play, Marks fired the team's first shot on goal forcing a save from the oppositions net minder. The team retained possession off the play and eventually
Bella Mabry capitalized with the goal.
The 1-0 lead ended up being enough, but only because of the excellence play of Aschemeier. The senior ended the game with six saves in the shutout victory.
The Thunder improve to 1-1 following the win. They will next take the pitch when they travel to Sewanee, Tenn. for a neutral site game against Transylvania University, hosted by Sewanee The University of the South. That game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 7.
