ST. LOUIS – The Trine University women's soccer team struck first but were ultimately outmatched by their hosts from Washington (Mo.) University, the second-ranked team in the country according to the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll. The Thunder left the pitch with an 8-1 loss.
In just the fifth minute of play, junior
Darcy Satkowiak notched the first goal of the season for Trine, giving them the early lead on the nationally-ranked Bears. The goal came following an early lightning delay on shot to the high left corner of the net.
The home side scored three goals over the rest of the half, taking a 3-1 lead into the intermission. WashU scored five more in the second to finish with the dominating 8-1 final score. A pair of keepers saw play for Trine, combining for 11 saves,
Sophie Aschemeier had six and
Madison Kinneer finished with five.
The Thunder will look to bounce back on the next stop of their road trip. They are set to face Illinois Wesleyan University on Sunday, September 1 with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. CT / 2 p.m. ET.
