ANGOLA, Ind. – Despite a herculean performance from freshman
Annie Kindseth in net, the Trine University women's hockey team came up short of nationally recognized St. Norbert College. The fell in the contest 1-0.
From the start of the game, it was clear that Kindseth was ready to play, making 15 saves in the first period. Unfortunately, the Green Knights, who were receiving votes in the most recent USCHO.com poll, found the lone weak moment of the night from the freshman and scored their goal with just under two minutes remaining in the period.
On the other end of the ice, the Thunder turned in their best offensive period of the night. They forced nine saves out of the opposition's goalie, including two during their best scoring chance which came in the 11
th minute. It was then that the Thunder had a two-on-one breakaway opportunity with
Sofia Koppa recording the first shot and
Kailey Mleko on the second. The senior's backhanded attempt was just a bit soft with the goalie able to turn it aside by inches.
The rest of the game was a masterclass from Kindseth. The freshman made 45 saves in the final two periods, for a total of 60. Even the high number doesn't do justice to the performance that she made in net, as she stonewalled multiple breakaway chances and dealt with backdoor rebounds throughout the stretch.
Still trailing by just one in the final minutes, Trine pulled the goalie for an extra attacker.
Payton Hans and Mleko each had scoring chances with the extra pressure. Hans' shows in the box score after a block turned her shot away while Mleko fell victim to a great poke check just as she seemingly found space for a shot.
The Thunder fall to 4-3-2 overall and 2-3-2 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play. They will look to bounce back when they face St. Norbert again tomorrow, Saturday, December 7. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
