ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's hockey team opened the home and conference portions of their schedule in impressive fashion, defeating Concordia University Wisconsin by the score of 6-2.
It was a truly balanced offensive effort by the Thunder, with 14 skaters recording at least a point in the contest.
Blake Tierney (0g, 2a),
Michael DiPietra (1g, 1a) and
Tyler Blanchard (1g, 1a) led the team with two points each.
The team opened the scoring in the sixth minute of the first period. Tierney started the play form near the blueline passing it to the far corner of the ice where
Brendan Hill was waiting. Hill moved through traffic to the side of the net before passing it toward the crease.
Tyler Fox was able to deflect it home for the 1-0 lead.
In the waning seconds of the period, Trine scored again. Working the special teams offensive after a Falcons penalty,
Logan Furstenau made a pass from the near faceoff circle, to the opposite side's blueline where
Bobby Price was waiting. The senior passed it on to the far faceoff circle before Blanchard scored the goal.
Out of the intermission Concordia cut into the lead with their first goal. It took most of the period, but the Thunder built up their cushion again. DiPietra started the play from the corner, with a pass to the point. Tierney fired a shot, that somehow made it through the bodies and onto goal for a save.
Keiton Klein was in position to collect the rebound and poke it home.
Both teams doubled their totals in the third period.
Sean Henry,
Sam Antenucci, and DiPietra each scored for the Thunder to get them to the final 6-2 victory.
In goal for Trine,
Kyle Kozma finished the game with just 10 saves with the defense ahead of him limiting shooting lanes throughout the contest.
The Thunder will look to finish off the weekend with a sweep, tomorrow, Sunday, November 10. Opening drop is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Thunder Ice Arena.
