Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Thunder Smother Concordia Wisconsin

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's hockey team finished the weekend sweep of visiting Concordia University Wisconsin with a smothering 3-0 victory. Three different members of the team scored in the contest, but Alexander Babich led the way with three points.

The Thunder's first goal came in the 16th minute of the contest. Babich forced a turnover near the offensive blueline before Luke deVries tipped the puck forward to Drew Welsch. The senior then went on a herculean run to the net that left most in the arena believing the goal was unassisted. His eventual shot went bar down and gave the team a 1-0 lead.

The team added to their lead in ninth minute of the second period. The goal came from a flurry of offensive effort, rather than in transition. First deVries fired a shot from the blueline that the Falcons' goalie stopped short. Logan Furstenau turned the rebound into a second shot on goal, that once again was saved, this time to the side. Babich finally finished off with the goal after forcing the puck home.

In the waning seconds of the period, Trine took advantage of a power play opportunity to score their third and final goal of the day. Running the special teams offense led to Babich taking a shot from the near faceoff circle that was blocked near the front of the net. The rebound was instantly dangerous ended up near the crease where Welsch pushed it toward the net and into the goalie's blocker. Sam Antenucci collected the leftover for the goal.

The Thunder offense ramped up through the game, including during the third period despite not scoring another goal. The team had ten shots in the first, 16 in the second and 18 in the third for a total of 44.

Defensively the team was absolutely smothering, allowing just 16 shots on goal. It looked like the opposition would go shotless in the first, until a last second breakaway gave them their lone effort. Most of the offensive push came in the waning minutes when the desperate Falcons pulled their goalie. Cristian Wong-Ramos was up for the challenge and finished the game with a shutout.

Trine finishes the weekend 4-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play. They will hit the road for their next games, facing the University of Dubuque for two games next weekend. The first is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, November 15.
