Falcons Overcome Women's Hockey

MEQUON, Wis. – The Trine University women's hockey team built an early 3-0 lead, but it wasn't enough with their hosts from Concordia University Wisconsin mounting a comeback effort ending in a 5-4 victory.

The Thunder scored three goals in the first period to take what felt like a commanding lead into the first intermission. The first goal of the season for the Thunder went to Payton Hans in unassisted fashion just over three minutes into the contest.

Seven minutes later the team struck again, this time with Hannah Lambers coming away with the goal with an assisted credited to Kailey Mleko. The senior went on to score a goal of her own in the 19th minute, after Hans caused a turnover on the penalty kill.

The Falcons cut into the deficit during the second period, posting a pair of goals to send the game to its second intermission with a 3-2 score.

Nearly at the 12 minute mark of the third period, Olivia Porthan gave the Thunder a two-goal lead again. She scored with assists from Sofia Vidmo and Abby Martin.

Concordia scored three goals over the final eight minutes of play, with the final coming with just fifty seconds remaining in the contest.

Despite finishing the game with the loss, Claire Schmaltz turned in a gutsy performance in net for the team. She finished the game with 51 saves.

Trine will look to bounce back tomorrow, Saturday, November 9 when they complete the weekend series against Concordia. That game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. ET.
