Drew Moore iced the game with a pair of free throw with three seconds left to give the #1 Trine University Men's Basketball team an 89-84 victory of Anderson University this evening. Trine improves to 4-0 while the Ravens suffer their first blemish, falling to 3-1.
A battle of NCAA Tournament teams from last season lived up to the hype with the squads swapping the lead six times. Moore led the Thunder with 25 points including four triples and a perfect 5-5 effort from the foul line.
Jayce Cusack added a 13-point 10-rebound double-double as five Thunder athletes scored in double figures. The Ravens were red-hot all night from the 3 point line making 14 of 31 shots. Tate Ivanyo led AU with 23 points and Nolan Swan made four triples, adding 16 points.
Trine opened the game by taking a 7-2 lead as Moore was hot from the start, scoring five of the seven. Trine was able to manage the lead through the early part of the first half but the barrage of three pointers helped the Ravens take a 28-24 lead. Cusack was able to stall the run with a triple of his own to cut the deficit to one. The teams traded baskets before Moore and
Nate Tucker buried threes to regain the lead for Trine. The Thunder would take a 47-44 lead to the break.
The Ravens would tie the game out the break with another triple, the Thunder then forced three straight one shot possessions and reclaimed a lead they would not surrender. Anderson cut the lead to 53-50 but Trine used an 11-2 run to gain a comfortable advantage and put the pressure on the visitors. The hosts were able to maintain a 10 point lead as the clocked dipped under 10 minutes to play. Three pointers again would pull the Ravens within three with six minutes to play. Trine held an 84-82 advantage with the clock rolling under 20 seconds to play, Moore drove the lane and put up a contested floater, the basket counted, and he was fouled. After the Moore free throw, Trine led by 5 and Anderson's Ivanyo was fouled on a three point attempt. He bookended the trip with makes to cut the lead to three. The Thunder inbounded to Moore out of a time out and he iced the game to send the Thunder to 4-0.
Trine shot 31-68 (45.6%) from the floor and 10-23 (43.5%) from the three point line. The Thunder out rebounded the Ravens 41-38 and forced 14 turnovers while committing just nine. The Ravens shot 27-61 (44.3%) from the floor and 14-31 (45.2%) from behind the line, including a blinding 7-13 (53.9%) in the first half.
Trine hosts Elmhurst on Saturday as the second game of a double header with the women's team. That game will tip off at 3:30 p.m.
