FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Trine University men's hockey team finished off the weekend sweep of Fredonia State University with an overtime victory. After an active first period, the Thunder needed an overtime goal to secure the 4-3 win.
The Blue Devils struck early to take their first lead of the weekend in just the second minute of play.
Seven minutes later the Thunder responded. With the offense working the puck around the boards,
Sam Antenucci ended up with the puck in the corner. His pass went to the near blueline where
Luke deVries was waiting to forward it on to his partner.
Aleksa Babic wasted no time firing a long distance shot toward the goal.
Drew Welsch blocked the goalie's view, and the shot found the back of the net.
Fredonia retook the lead five minutes later, but only for a little over a minute of game time.
Tyler Fox caused a turnover behind the net and passed the puck to along to
Ethan Janda who pushed the puck toward the goal. Fox crashed to the net and poked it home for the goal.
Trine took their own lead in the final minute of the period. Welsch retook control of the puck in the near corner and passed the puck through the defense to
Blake Tierney at the point. Tierney had a one timer on the goal that found the back of the net.
The 3-2 lead lasted through the second and into the third period, before the home team responded with their third of the day. Neither team was able to score before the end of regulation and the game headed to overtime with a 3-3 score.
In the three-on-three extra stanza, Antenucci headed to the bench, leaving the puck with Welsch near the blueline. Welsch skated toward the corner before being tied up by a defender. He was able to pass the puck out of trouble to
Sean Henry who skated parallel to the goal line across the face of the net. He flicked a backhanded shot over the goalie and into the top of the net for the walk off game winner.
Trine will open the home and Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) portions of their season next weekend when they host Concordia University Wisconsin. Last season the Thunder swept the Falcons on the road with both games ending with a 5-1 score. Game one of this season's doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday, November 9 at 7 p.m.
