Women's Basketball Beats Allegheny

ANGOLA, Ind. – The #23 Trine University Women's Basketball team closed out the 2024 Cameron Hospital Classic with an exciting 77-65 victory over Allegheny. Trine followed up a record setting performance last night with a gritty victory this afternoon. The Thunder saw three players score 15 or more points. Trine is now 3-0 on the young season while the Gators fall to 0-4.

Erin Sherwood posted a double-double with a career-high 21 points and 12 rebounds, Sidney Wagner added 17 points and Katie Tate had 15.

Trine quickly took a 5-0 lead as Tate scored the first five points of the game, Sherwood added the next four and Allison Capouch hit a triple and the Thunder had a 15-3 lead. The game looked like it might get out of hand, but Allegheny closed on a 15-7 run to cap a high scoring first quarter with Trine leading 22-18.

Trine controlled the second quarter, outscoring the Gators 18-10, taking a 40-28 lead to the break. Capouch hit a pair of triples during the frame to spark the Thunder offense.

Trine held at least a 10 point lead for most of the third quarter as Sherwood and Tate each had six.

Wagner set the tone in the fourth quarter, immediately attacking the basket and earning an and-1 attempt that she would convert. Sherwood followed that with a converted and-1 of her own to push the lead to 10. Wagner hit a triple to push the lead to 13 at the 6 minute mark. Up nine with just under a minute to play, the Gators began fouling to try and gain extra possessions. Wagner would hit the first pair to stretch the lead to eight, on the ensuing possession she grabbed the rebound and was fouled again. She nailed one of the free throws and iced the game.

Trine will take on #19 Baldwin Wallace in a battle of nationally ranked teams on Wednesday night in Berea. Trine then returns home to take on Ohio Northern on Saturday, November 23rd at 1 p.m. as the first game of a double header with the men's team.
