Women's Hockey Secures First Win of Season

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's hockey team picked up their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over the University of Dubuque on Friday night.

The Thunder struck just over 90 seconds into the contest. After Olivia Porthan was unable to push the puck through from in close, the puck ended up just on a defenders stick behind the net. Abby Martin retook possession and skated around the boards and up the near side, before dumping the puck off to Payton Hans near the blueline. The senior skated back throw the defense before using a screen by Ryleigh White to confuse the goalie and leave a wide open near side of the net.

It was early in the second period before the team added to their lead. With a pair of Spartans in the box, Trine was working in the offensive end of the ice, pressing their advantage. It looked like the opposition would clear the zone, but the pass off the wall ended up at the blueline for Hannah Lambers. The sophomore's shot went wide but took a favorable bounce off the boards to the far circle. From their Kailey Mleko took a shot that ricocheted off a defender's and the goalie's sticks before ending up in the back of the net.

Neither team scored through the remainder of the contest. Annie Kindseth anchored the defensive effort from the net and finished the game with her first career shutout. She faced 23 shots in the game.

The Thunder improve to 1-2-0 overall and 1-2-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play. They will host the Spartans again tomorrow, Saturday, November 16. Opening puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m.
