Third Period Goals Lift Thunder to First Win

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Trine University men's hockey team opened the season with a 2-0 victory over their hosts from Fredonia State University.

The Thunder outshot the Blue Devils throughout the contest, but it took into the third period for the team to crack the back of the net. Aided by a pair of Fredonia penalties, Trine worked their power play offense with the two-man advantage. Tim Organ kept a middling pass in the zone avoiding a reset for the offense, before passing the puck to the far circle. From that faceoff dot, Logan Furstenau fired a shot on goal. Off the rebound, Brendan Finn notched a few attempts on the goal, eventually forcing it by the goalie for the 1-0 lead.

Fredonia forced the offense during the remainder of the period, recording their highest shot total of the night. Kyle Kozma was up for the task, retaining the shutout. He finished the game with 25 saves, 11 of which came in the final period.

With time waning in regulation, the Blue Devils pulled their goalie in favor of an extra attacker. After one of the offensive pushes by the home team, the Thunder ended up in possession behind the net. Sean Henry settled the puck there as the rest of the team prepared to exit the zone. His first pass found Luke deVries near the blueline, but the freshman was hemmed in by the opposition and was forced to pass the puck back to Henry. This time Henry's quick pass ricocheted off the boards and beyond the Fredonia players. Sam Antenucci collected the puck at the other blueline, skating a few strides before scoring on the empty net.

The goal iced the game and gave the team their first victory of the season. They will finish the series against the Blue Devils tomorrow, Saturday, November 2 at 4 p.m.
