Women's Volleyball Takes Down St. Mary's

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Trine University Women's Volleyball team got back on track in MIAA play tonight inside the Angela Athletic & Wellness Complex. Trine defeated St. Mary's (Ind.) 3-1 to pick up their first MIAA win of the season. The Thunder are now 14-3 (1-1 MIAA) while the Belles fall to 8-10 (0-3 MIAA).
 
Trine defeated the Belles 25-22, 22-25, 25-14, 25-20. Madison Dominick delivered 14 kills, 6 blocks and 6 aces for Trine, those numbers led all players. Anna Zellers and Georgia Pogue each passed out more than 20 assists, Zellers had a game-high 23 and Pogue had 21. Kacie Van Kalker had 15 digs for the Thunder. On the night Trine tallied 11 aces and 13 blocks.
 
Set one was tight early, St. Mary's was able to break a 6-6 tie with a 4-0 run. St. Mary's maintained their lead through most of the set leading 20-17 late. Trine took over the rest of the way, Julia Maggio sent home 2 of her 12 kills, while Van Kalker and Cara Wlodarczyk each had service aces to complete the comeback, 25-22.
 
Set two was nearly identical in favor of the Belles, Trine took an early 7-2 lead, Trine held a 15-14 lead before the Belles pulled away to win set two by an identical 25-22 margain.
 
The Thunder responded well in set three, after taking an early lead led by two kills and a block from Francesca Queary, Trine saw their lead evaporate to just one point. Unwilling to allow St. Mary's to hang around, Cassidy Victor drilled three kills to spark a 7-0 run and give Trine a 16-8 lead they would not relinquish, Dominick would ice the set with back to back aces.
 
With a chance to put the match away in set four, Trine did not allow the opportunity to pass, taking a 7-3 lead early on and stretching it to 21-10 before the Belles made things interesting with an 8-0 run. Trine was able to find their footing, sending home three kills to take the match and clinch their first MIAA win on the year.
 
Trine heads to Adrian to take on the Bulldogs next Tuesday, October 15th at 6:30 p.m.
