Thunder Complete Comeback Against Britons

ALBION, Mich. – The Trine University men's soccer team overcame an early deficit to start the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) portion of their season with a win. The Thunder finished the match with a 3-1 victory.

The Britons opened the scoring in the 18th minute of the contest, connecting a pass inside the box to set up the shot. Despite the best efforts of the Trine offense, it looked like that lead would last into the intermission.

With just over a minute remaining in the half, the Thunder earned a throw in deep in the offensive zone. A few passes put the ball near midfield where one of the visiting backs fired a long kick toward the goal. The ball was seemingly settled by the Albion defense, but it bounced by the keeper and into the back of the net for the own goal. The 1-1 score lasted did last into the intermission.

In fact, it lasted well into the second half. It was Dalton Douglas that broke the stalemate and gave the visiting side their first lead of the day. He scored from the top of the penalty area to make the score 2-1.

Ten minutes later the Thunder drew a penalty off a foul in the box. Luke Kearns took the attempt and put the game out of reach with the goal, earning the final score of 3-1.

Despite allowing the original goal, Aidan McGonagle played a tough game in net. He finished the game with three saves while leading the defense.

Trine improves to 3-6-0 overall and 1-0 in MIAA play following the victory. They will continue their season when they host Calvin University on Saturday, October 12. Kickoff from Weaver Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
