Thunder Dominate Knights

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's soccer team upended visiting Calvin University by the score of 2-0, to stay undefeated in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play and as the only team with two wins in the early portion of the season.

The victory represents the first time in over a decade that the Thunder have defeated the Knights during regulation, the last victory coming on September 27, 2011 also by the score of 2-0. The most recent win against Calvin came in November of 2021, during the MIAA Tournament in overtime.

Trine came out firing on all cylinders pressuring the defense from the start. It paid off quickly for the team with Ben Borak making a spectacular pass to catch Braden Estep running past the last defender toward the far corner of the field. Estep fired a laser into the side of the net and over the keeper's reach for the goal.

Rather than settling into a defensive posture, the Thunder continued to apply pressure. Both teams traded shots in the rest of the first half ending even with five total and three on goal each. The difference was in goal, where Aidan Mcgonagle made three saves to hold the shutout.

The back and forth nature of the contest continued in the second half, with the Thunder countering an increasingly frantic Knights' squad. The first shots went to the visitors and McGonagle made the first save of the half at the 70 minute mark. He ended up making two in the half to finish off the shutout performance with five.

The entire back half of the lineup played spectacular defense in the contest, never giving the visiting side a great chance at the goal, especially in the second half.

A free kick in the 80th minute nearly gave the Thunder their second goal, when Gavin Hardy placed his chance from near midfield just over the crossbar.

Two minutes later a corner yielded the final goal of the contest. Estep took the set piece and placed the ball just in front of the goal, where Ryan Cote was waiting to head it home.

Trine improves to 4-6-0 overall and 2-0-0 in MIAA play. They will continue the season when they travel to face Alma College on Tuesday, October 15. That contest is scheduled to kick off at 3:30 p.m.
