ALBION, Mich. – The Trine Women's Volleyball team fell in five sets to MIAA-foe Albion tonight at Kresge Gymnasium. Three different Thunder hitters registered double digit kills but a late rally in the fifth set by the Britons gave them the victory. Trine now sits 16-4 (3-2 MIAA) while Albion moves to 7-18 (3-1 MIAA).
Each set came down to the wire as neither team claimed a set by more than six points. Trine rallied from a first set defeat 22-25 to take sets two and three 25-20 and 25-19. Albion then rallied in sets four and five by scores of 25-22 and 15-13.
Madison Dominick led Trine with 15 kills, two aces, and three blocks.
Kacie Van Kalker also had two aces to go with 30 digs and
Kylie Rowland tallied a trio of blocks.
Anna Zellers added 27 assists.
Trine rallied from deficits of 14-12 and 16-14 in set one to take a 20-18 lead as
Julia Maggio pounded out five kills. The hosts closed the set with a 7-2 run to take set one.
The Thunder turned the tide in sets two and three taking victories of 25-20 and 25-19. Dominick added four kills in set two as Trine raced out to a 20-13 advantage to take the set. The Thunder defense stepped up in set three forcing a dozen Briton errors. Dominick, Rowland, Maggio, and
Francesca Queary all recorded blocks.
Trine rallied to set four at 22 after trailing 18-11, with kills from five different attackers. Albion would score the last three points to force a decisive fifth set.
The fifth set proved to be a thriller as the teams swapped the lead four times and were tied ten different times. Kills from Maggio gave Trine leads of 5-4 and 6-5.
Catherine Dobies notched back to back kills as the teams switched sides. Errors from the Brits gave Trine an 11-9 advantage. Dobies broke an 11 all tie with a third kill for the set. Albion would rally from there to close out the match with a 15-13 victory.
Trine heads to Milwaukee this weekend for a three game slate. Taking on Mount Mary Friday and Saturday before closing the trip with a Saturday afternoon match against Moody Bible College.
