Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer opens MIAA play with 2-1 victory over Albion

ANGOLA, Ind. – Ashlyn Swartz netted her first goal of the season in the 76th minute to push women's soccer past Albion, 2-1, on Wednesday evening at Weaver Field. Abby Robison tallied her second assist of the night when she found Swartz on a high, cross pass that Swartz sent home off a header. Trine moves to 6-2-2 (1-0-0 MIAA) and drops the Britons to 1-6-2 (0-1-0 MIAA).

Robison's first assist came just three minutes in to the contest when she sent in a cross from the right side that found a wide-open Teresa Ashbrook who ripped a shot past the Britons keeper to give the Thunder an early lead. Albion was not discouraged by the early goal as they notched a goal of their own in the 12th minute to knot the score. The next 63 minutes was a physical defensive battle as each 50-50 ball was hotly contested and both Thunder and Briton players consistently found themselves being knocked to the ground by the opposition.

In the 55th minute Trine had a fast break that presented their best opportunity for a goal since early in the first half. Erin Scully led the break before dishing the ball off to Ashbrook who rocketed the ball just too far right of the goal and the tie remained. Swartz subbed in in the 73rd minute and was immediately on the offensive registering a shot just a few seconds after entering the game. After a goal kick a battle ensued in the Britons' defensive midfield. That's when Robison was able to corral the ball and lead the Thunder charge down the right sideline, her cross came in the box high but Swartz was able to leap in front of it and knock it past the keeper for the winning goal.

Each team recorded 11 shots with Albion holding a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Trine had seven corner opportunities to Albion's one.

Trine hosts #18 Calvin next Tuesday at 7 p.m. on Shive Field as they continue MIAA play.
