Box Score DANVILLE, Ky. – The Trine University women's soccer team scored the first goal of the game, but the nationally-ranked squad from Centre College mounted a successful comeback to defend their home pitch by the score of 3-1.
The Colonels were ranked 14th in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 preseason poll and entered today's contest with a 2-0 record. The Thunder entered the contest with a 1-0 record, after a convincing win in their first contest of the season.
The first half of the game saw Trine have the offensive success as they outshot the opposition 5-2. Just beyond the 13-minute mark, those shots paid off with sophomore Teresa Ashbrook tallying the first goal of the contest.
The team kept up the pressure over the next few minutes with sophomore Bella Mabry forcing a save from the Colonels' keeper just over two minutes later. The team also received two corner kick opportunities in succeeding minutes.
The Thunder made their first mistake of the contest in the 22nd minute when a foul inside the penalty area gave Centre a penalty kick opportunity. The opposition would convert bringing the game back to a draw. That 1-1 score held into the intermission.
The second half went to Colonels from start to finish. The team outshot the Thunder 12-2 in the half and recorded a pair of goals to break the tie and then seal the game at 3-1.
Trine falls to 1-1 following the tough loss. The team will next take the pitch when they travel to face Augustana (Ill.) College for a 1 p.m. ET match on Saturday, September 10.
