Box Score OLIVET, Mich. - It was a
wild finish in their first game of the season as the Trine
University women's soccer team pulled out a 2-1 victory in
double overtime over Manchester University on sophomore Eleni
Agelopolous' (Munster, Ind./Munster ) goal in the extra
frame.
The Spartans would strike first as they netted
the first goal just 12 minutes into the game after their initial
shot was blocked by a Trine defender.
Trine would answer back just before halftime as
the freshman duo of Lindsay Hoffman (Millbury, Ohio/Lake) and Kayla
Case (Olivet, Mich./Olivet) connected on a through ball up the
middle as Case scored from six yards out.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net
in the second half as both teams tallied five shots in the period,
sending the game into overtime.
The first extra frame saw the Thunder take two
shots on goal but was denied their opportunity to take the
game.
Trine needed just one shot in the second overtime
as Agelopolous netted the game-winner 3:26 into the period. Yet
another freshman in Jamie McCarrell (Jackson, Mich./Jackson) found
Agelopolous who was able to slip the ball past the Spartans keeper
from 10 yard out.
Making her first collegiate start in goal for the
Thunder was freshman Sloan Davis (Olivet, Mich./Olivet) and made
eight saves on the nights to earn the victory.
Case led the Thunder with a game-high four shots
on goal while Agelopolous has three shots on target.
For the game, Manchester out-shot the Thunder
15-14, but Trine was able to place 10 shots on goal while the
Spartans had just nine.
Trine will return to action on the final day of
the Comet Cup hosted by Olivet College where they will face the
Milwaukee School of Engineering tomorrow, September 1 at 3:00
p.m.
