Box Score ANGOLA, Ind. - Wet
conditions led to several unlucky goals against the Trine
University women's soccer team as they dropped their MIAA
opener 4-2 to Calvin College. The Thunder are now 2-3 on the season
and 0-1 in the conference.
The Knights took control of the game early as
they scored just 3:46 into the game off a long shot from about 10
yards beyond the box. The Thunder tied the game in the 29th minute
as sophomore Kristin Elliott (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster)
scored her team-leading third goal of the season. Freshman Morgan
Baldwin (Amanda, Ohio/Amanda-Clearcreek) had a long throw in that
found Elliott in the box who then headed the ball inside the far
post.
The rains began to fall just before the end of
the first half and continued to come down as the teams headed out
for the second half. The Knights pounced quickly to open the half
as they once again scored just three minutes in. Nine minutes
later, the field conditions came into play as what would have been
a normal save opportunity for senior keeper Jen Wall (New Haven,
Ind./New Haven). A slick ball and wet hands turned into a goal for
Calvin as the ball slipped through Walls hands giving the Knights a
3-1 lead. Calvin would add one more goal in the 79th minute.
With just 50 seconds left in the game, Calvin was
called for a handball inside the box giving the Thunder a penalty
kick opportunity. Sophomore Alyssa Goodnight (Atlanta,
Ind./Hamilton Heights) stepped up the take the kick and buried the
ball home in the top left corner, netting her first goal of the
season.
Despite the soggy conditions, Wall made seven
saves in goal on the afternoon including two spectacular leaping
saves.
Calvin held a 16-to-6 shot margin including a
11-to-5 shot on goal advantage.
Trine will look to bounce back and earn their
first conference win of the season when they host Hope College on
September 17 at Noon.
