TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Trine University volleyball team dropped a pair of games this afternoon at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The Thunder fell to Rose-Hulman in five sets and to the Illinois Institute of Technology in four sets. Trine falls to 6-8.
The Thunder won the first set against IIT before conceding the reverse sweep to the Scarlet Hawks.
Reese Steenwyk led the offense with 10 kills.
Trine took set one, led by a dozen kills from five players. The Thunder led early, but Illinois Tech raced back to lead 11-10. Trine answered with a 10-4 run to take control of the set and cruise to the win. Trine trailed for most of a tight set two and closed the gap to 23-22 but were unable to complete the comeback. IIT put the match away over the next two sets, taking large leads and not allowing Trine to rally.
The second match went to the host Engineers 25-23, 11-25, 10-25, 25-21, 16-14. Trine hit .405 in the first set but was doomed by a half-dozen service errors. The service issues were quickly remedied as Trine nailed 11 perfect serves over a pair of convincing wins in sets two and three.
Julia Maggio had the hot hand with seven;
Cali Stevons,
Annika Schrock, and
Anna Kate Young each added two more and
Elli Baker and
Abigail Hughes each had one.
RHIT pulled away late in a tight set four to force the fifth set. The match was tied nine times and the lead changed four in the fifth set. The final tie came at 14 all with a kill from Steenwyk. RHIT closed out the match with the final two points.
Trine travels to Bluffton University on Tuesday evening for a matchup with the Beavers.
