OLIVET, Mich. – The Trine University women's tennis team resumed their match against The University of Olivet and finished off with a 7-0 sweep. The match was started yesterday, Tuesday, April 21 before being suspended until today because of inclement weather.
Before the suspension of play, the Thunder took the first team point of the day by sweeping the doubles portion of the contest. Elina Locane and Alexis Maloney won the top match 6-2. Emilee Bassett and Emily Hatseras won the No. 2 match 6-1. Emma Beehler and Addison Lockwood won the third match 6-0.
The team's finished off the dual with the singles competition, with Trine dominating in all six matches. Hatseras in the No. 5 match and Beehler in the No. 2 match allowed just three games against. Hatseras won 6-1, 6-2 while Beehler won 6-2, 6-1. Locane in the top match (6-1, 6-1) and Bassett in the No. 3 match (6-0, 6-2) each only needed two more games then a sweep. Maloney gave up just one game in the No. 4 match winning 6-0, 6-1. Avery Elsworth took the No. 6 match 6-0, 6-0.
The Thunder finish the regular season 16-5 overall and 4-4 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play. The win is significant for the team, marking it as the most wins in a season by a Trine women's tennis team since the institution moved to NCAA Division III play.
The team has secured a spot in the MIAA Women's Tennis Tournament which is set to begin on Tuesday, April 28. They await the final results from around the rest of the conference before they will know the opponent, location and time of their tournament opener.
