Thunder Win Two at NFCA Leadoff

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Trine University softball team opened the 2026 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III Leadoff Classic with a pair of wins. They defeated Bethel (Minn.) University 11-3 before holding off Pacific Lutheran University 7-4.

The Thunder opened the day against the Royals and scored in their first at-bats to take the first lead of the contest. After Keelin Wheaton reached base on an error, Tyra Marcum eventually brought her home with single.

Bethel tied the game in the top of the third before the Trine offense took off. The Thunder plated six runs in the bottom of the third, another in the fourth and then three in the fifth to finish the game early. Wheaton led the way in the contest, scoring a pair of runs and recording three RBIs including the final two. Macy Rocha and Clare Feehan each had two RBIs in the game. Whitney Duell had a triple and a double in the game while also scoring a pair of runs.

Kami Arnett pitched the game for the Thunder, earning her second win of the season. She finished the game allowing three runs on six hits and three walks. She struck out four in the game.

Serving as visitors for the second game, it took until the top of the third inning for Trine to score their first runs. After a flyout to start the inning, Debbie Hill earned a walk and the next eight batters reached base. During the stretch Emma Lee, Abbie Geib, Duell and Wheaton each recorded RBIs, building a 6-0 lead. Duell brought in another run in the fifth inning.

Sydney Adolfson made the start for the Thunder in the circle and took a shutout into the bottom of the fifth. She pitched into the seventh when more trouble brought Alex Rodriguez in as relief to finish off the victory.

The Thunder improve to 8-0 overall following the day. They will continue their time at the NFCA Leadoff Classic tomorrow, Saturday, March 6 with a pair of nationally ranked opponents. At 10 a.m. they are scheduled to face #24 Belhaven (Miss.) University. They follow up with a game against Berry (Ga.) College at 12:30 p.m.
