ORLANDO, Fla. – The Trine University men's tennis team picked up two more wins on their second to last day in Florida. They defeated Wartburg College this morning by the score of 5-2 and Concordia University Chicago 7-0 this evening.
It was a battle with the Knights, especially during the singles portion of the dual. The team started the day with a 1-0 lead after taking all three doubles matches. Both the top team of Andrew Spirrison and Sammy Yin and the third team of Landon Bassett and Asher Monson won by the score of 6-3. Drew Hackney and Emmett Wirth won the No. 2 match 6-2.
Monson had the closest of the singles matches wins, taking No. 6 with scores of 6-4, 6-1. The other three wins came in the top three matches. Hackney won 6-2, 6-2, Yin took the second match 6-2, 6-1 and Spirrison won 6-1, 6-0.
The evening dual was a dominate performance. None of the matches saw the Cougars take more than two games form the Thunder. The top two duals went 6-1 in favor of Trine while the third was a sweep by Bassett and Monson.
There were three sweeps during the singles matches, coming from Hackney at No. 1, Monson at No. 4 and Bassett at No. 5. Both Leyton Byler at No. 2 and Wirth at No. 3 won with scores of 6-1, 6-1. The final win came from Alex Flores in the No. 6 match with scores of 6-2, 6-0.
The Thunder finish the day with a 9-1 overall record. They will finish their time in the south tomorrow, Thursday, March 5 when they take on Allegheny College. That match is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
